The earring is two materials in one line: a solid metal hoop that clips through the lobe, and a single large resin drop set into the bottom of the hoop so the two read as one continuous form. The metal carries the hinge and the structure; the resin carries the volume and the colour. That split is deliberate, because a drop this size in solid metal would be heavy on the lobe and a drop this size in stone would not take the shape.
Two colourways run on the same silhouette. One is opaque black, polished to a soft sheen; the other is a translucent tortoiseshell brown-yellow that lets light through and shows the swirl inside the material. Every design on this page is made in 316L stainless steel — the molybdenum-bearing austenitic grade, and the same grade specified for surgical implants and marine fittings. The “L” is low carbon, which is what keeps chain links and hollow forms sound at the joins.
Grades are worth stating rather than implying, because 316L, 304 and 201 look identical in a photograph and differ by real money per tonne. We name the grade on every design. Is the whole earring steel?
The hoop, hinge and post are 316L steel. The large drop at the base is resin / acetate, not steel and not stone — it is cast, which is how it takes that volume and that semi-transparent colour.
Is the drop a stone?
No. There are no stones in this earring. The colour comes entirely from the resin: one version is opaque black, the other a translucent tortoiseshell brown-yellow.
Does the resin scratch?
Resin is softer than steel, so it can pick up fine surface marks with hard wear. It is polished, and it can be brought back with a soft cloth rather than a metal polish.
