About this cabochon stud earrings

This is a range, not one stud: two designs on one construction. Each is a stack of two stones, the upper one small and openly faceted, the lower one large, oval and smooth on top. They sit in separate settings — the upper stone in a slim four-prong box, the lower in an open-backed basket — so there is a visible line between them and the large stone is not hidden behind the small one. The result is a stud with height: it stands off the ear rather than lying flat against it.

The two designs differ by colour family, not by construction. One pairs a rectangular pale blue faceted stone with a deep blue oval cabochon carrying fine gold flecks; the other pairs an oval pale green faceted stone with a green oval cabochon of even, slightly mottled tone. The cabochons are cut as smooth domes with no facets, so their colour reads as a solid field, and because that cut is the point of the design we describe the shape and colour rather than a mineral. Both are quoted per design.

316L

The grade, in plain terms

Every design on this page is made in 316L stainless steel — the molybdenum-bearing austenitic grade, and the same grade specified for surgical implants and marine fittings. The “L” is low carbon, which is what keeps chain links and hollow forms sound at the joins.

Grades are worth stating rather than implying, because 316L, 304 and 201 look identical in a photograph and differ by real money per tonne. We name the grade on every design. Questions about this cabochon stud earrings

Are the large stones natural?

They are cut as cabochons — smooth domes with no facets — and we describe them by shape and colour rather than by mineral name. The deep blue carries fine gold flecks and the green is an even, slightly mottled tone; confirm the shade on samples.

Why are there two stones in one earring?

The smaller faceted stone sits above the large dome in its own setting, so the earring has height on the ear. The two are mounted separately, which is why a line shows between them instead of the stones blending into one.

Is the large stone open at the back?

Yes. The lower stone sits in an open-backed basket, so light passes behind it and the colour does not go flat. The upper stone is in a slim prong box.

Can I order both designs?

Yes, and each is its own line. Give us the quantity split per design and we quote and pack to it; mixed orders are normal.
