About this natural stone drop earrings

This is a range of two designs, both hung on the same hooked ear wire and built the same way: a stone at the top, a rectangular stone in the middle and a larger teardrop at the bottom, joined by small links so the drop swings. The first runs blue throughout, with a veined teardrop, a rectangular blue stone and a round blue stone set in a claw at the top. The second runs warm, pairing a banded brown teardrop with a black rectangular stone and a smoky marquise stone between.

The ear wires, links and all settings are 316L stainless steel, the grade family also sold as SUS316L, so the earrings do not tarnish and are hypoallergenic for everyday wear. The drops are natural stone, so veining and banding differ from pair to pair; the small faceted stones between are cubic zirconia. The gold is a gold tone plating over the steel, with the plating thickness quoted per micron.

316L stainless steel	Wires, links and settings are 316L stainless steel, a marine-grade alloy with molybdenum at roughly 2-3% and chromium at 16-18%, which is why it does not tarnish and is safe against skin for daily wear.
Natural stone	The teardrops and rectangles are natural stone. Veining and banding vary from piece to piece, so no two pairs match exactly; we confirm the shade range before a run.
Gold tone plating	The gold is a gold tone plating over the steel, not a PVD bond; plating thickness is quoted per micron.

316L

The grade, in plain terms

Every design on this page is made in 316L stainless steel — the molybdenum-bearing austenitic grade, and the same grade specified for surgical implants and marine fittings. The “L” is low carbon, which is what keeps chain links and hollow forms sound at the joins.

Grades are worth stating rather than implying, because 316L, 304 and 201 look identical in a photograph and differ by real money per tonne. We name the grade on every design. Questions about this natural stone drop earrings

How many designs are there?

Two. One runs blue, with a veined teardrop, a rectangular blue stone and a round blue stone at the top; the other runs warm, with a banded brown teardrop, a black rectangular stone and a smoky marquise between them.

Are the stones natural?

The drops and the rectangular stones are natural stone, so veining and banding differ from pair to pair. The small faceted stones between them are cubic zirconia, which keeps the sparkle consistent across pairs.

What grade of steel is it, and is it hypoallergenic?

The wires, links and settings are 316L stainless steel, the same grade family sold as SUS316L. It is hypoallergenic for most wearers and does not react with skin. It does contain nickel, around 10-14%, tightly bound in the alloy, so it stays low-sensitising for most wearers.

Is the drop fixed or does it swing?

It swings. The three parts are joined by small links rather than set in one rigid piece, so each stone moves independently and the earring catches light as the wearer turns.
