About this chunky twist chain necklace

The construction is deliberate and simple. Each oval link is a closed, polished form; between two links sits a short twisted rope section that passes through both, so the rope becomes the joint as well as a decorative break. That means no visible solder points along the run and a consistent rhythm: link, twist, link, twist, all the way round. The links are oval rather than round, which keeps the chain lying flat on the collarbone instead of rolling.

It is one design offered three ways and in two weights. In steel tone the whole chain is polished stainless steel, the hardest-wearing of the three. In gold tone the links and rope are both gold, which reads as a single warm metal. In the two-tone version the links are gold and the rope segments stay steel, so the twist comes forward as a bright line against the gold. The heavier weight widens the link and thickens the rope without changing the pattern, so a stockist can show the design at two scales and quote per colourway and weight.

The grade, in plain terms

Every design on this page is made in 316L stainless steel — the molybdenum-bearing austenitic grade, and the same grade specified for surgical implants and marine fittings. The “L” is low carbon, which is what keeps chain links and hollow forms sound at the joins.

Grades are worth stating rather than implying, because 316L, 304 and 201 look identical in a photograph and differ by real money per tonne. We name the grade on every design. What are the three versions?

Steel tone with no plating, gold tone throughout, and a two-tone version where the oval links are gold and the twisted rope segments stay steel tone.

Is the rope a separate chain?
