About this zinc alloy id tag

Cast zinc alloy is the reason this tag looks more worked than a flat blank. The mould produces the rim, the step down to the panel and the polished edge at once, and the panel sits recessed so engraved or printed text is protected by the surround. The trade-off is weight and plating: zinc alloy is denser than steel and it is always plated rather than left bare, so the finish on the rim is a wear point that a solid steel tag simply does not have. Colours offered are blue, purple, black, pink, rose and red.

The face is approximately 30 mm; the mould is not held to a tight figure and the supplier does not publish an exact one, so treat this as a nominal size and confirm it on a sample before you print packaging or size artwork. What moves the price is the plating: a single colour plate costs less than a two-tone build where the rim and lettering are one colour and the recess another, and colour matching across repeat orders on zinc alloy is never quite as exact as on steel, so ask for a plated sample from the run you will actually receive.

Questions about this zinc alloy id tag

Why is the size only given as approximate?

Because the casting mould is not held to a published exact figure. We quote it as approx. 30 mm and confirm the actual measurement on the sample you approve, so nothing is printed against a guess.

How does zinc alloy compare with a stainless steel tag?

The casting gives you shape detail a cut blank cannot, and it is heavier. Steel is bare metal and cannot chip down to a base layer; zinc alloy is always plated, so the rim is the part to watch.

What happens when the plating wears?

Wear shows first on the rim and the edge, where the tag knocks against a bowl or a buckle, and the base metal reads dull underneath. Plating build is a line item in the quote for exactly this reason.

Can I order a colour sample before a full run?

Yes, and we recommend it on this tag. Ask for a plated sample from the production run, not from a colour card, because the two can differ.
