Pet ID tags and nameplates, engraved at the size it will be worn

A pet tag is read at arm's length by a stranger holding a frightened animal, so the only specification that matters is whether the engraving is legible at finished size. This is the page where we are blunt about which base to pick and which to avoid.

How to buy this category

Most tag enquiries start with a shape and end with a legibility problem. A 20 mm bone with four lines of text will not read; the same artwork on a 38 mm rectangle will. We proof the artwork at the finished dimensions before tooling, because a tag that cannot be read is a tag that gets returned.

Base choice follows the market, not the catalogue. 304 stainless takes a laser mark that stays sharp and does not chip; 316L adds corrosion resistance for coastal or humid markets at a small cost; zinc alloy is the cheapest route and is fine for a colour-filled fashion tag, but the plating, not the metal, decides its life.

Attachments fail more often than tags do. A split ring that opens is the usual reason a tag is lost, so we quote the ring as part of the piece rather than as an accessory.

  • ✓Stock minimum 50 pcs per design — one shape, one base, as many colours as the mould allows
  • ✓Engraving is priced per side; a new artwork file carries a one-off setup charge
  • ✓Blank tags are available if you engrave locally — ask for the blank price, it is lower
  • ✓Fixing ring and any bell are quoted with the tag, not added later

ID Tags FAQ

Questions about id tags in pet

What is the smallest tag size you would put four lines of text on?
In practice, about 30 mm on the long edge for four short lines, and 35–38 mm if two of those lines are a phone number and an address. Below that we will proof it and show you the reduced view before tooling rather than let you find out at the retail end.
Should I order 304 or 316L for a pet tag?
304 unless the market is coastal, tropical or the tag will live on a swimming dog — then 316L. Both take the same engraving. The difference is corrosion resistance, and the cost difference is small at tag sizes, so the decision is about returns rather than price.
Can the tag be a different colour on the front and back?
On zinc alloy tags with a colour fill, yes — enamel or epoxy can differ front to back. On stainless, the metal is the colour unless it is plated, and a plated tag wears at the edges first, so we will tell you where the wear will show.
Do you supply the split rings?
Yes, quoted with the tag. A tag is usually lost through the ring rather than through the tag, so we would rather spec a ring that holds than save two cents on it.
Are you a manufacturer or a trading company?
We are a China-based B2B fashion jewellery supplier with our own design, sourcing and quality-control team, and we do not own a factory. The benches your order runs on belong to partner production lines in Guangdong that we work with directly and visit during your production. We publish no factory address, floor area, headcount or founding year, because those numbers describe a plant rather than the service you are buying. Ask any supplier this question, and check whether the answer matches the paperwork you get.
