About this baroque stone bead necklace

This is a beaded necklace rather than a chain or a pendant: large stone beads in baroque (irregular) shapes are strung on a black cord, with the cord knotted between the beads so they stay spaced and the necklace keeps its shape. Gold-toned steel spacer beads in elongated barrel shapes sit at intervals, lifting the run off a single flat colour.

It is a different construction from our multi-colour bead necklace. That piece is a run of small, uniform round beads in one colour; here the beads are large and deliberately uneven, the cord is knotted at every joint and the gold spacers break the run up. The stones are supplied as coloured stone; a specified mineral is quoted separately.

The grade, in plain terms

Every design on this page is made in 316L stainless steel — the molybdenum-bearing austenitic grade, and the same grade specified for surgical implants and marine fittings. The “L” is low carbon, which is what keeps chain links and hollow forms sound at the joins.

Grades are worth stating rather than implying, because 316L, 304 and 201 look identical in a photograph and differ by real money per tonne. We name the grade on every design. How is this different from your multi-colour bead necklace?

That piece is a run of small, uniform round beads in one colour. Here the beads are large and baroque, the cord is knotted between them and gold-tone steel spacers break the run up, so the look is deliberately irregular.
