The dome is chosen for comfort as much as looks: the rounded upper face skims over pockets and sleeves instead of catching an edge, which is why it is the shape that survives the most wear. On a black ring that matters, because a coating that chips along a sharp edge is what fails first.
PVD is the reason to insist on the process, not just the colour. The coating metal is vaporised in a vacuum chamber and bonds at a molecular level, giving a thinner but considerably harder layer than electroplating — which can be laid on thicker, up to several microns, but stays softer. We state the thickness in microns on the quotation.

Questions about this black pvd dome ring
Will the black coating chip or peel?
PVD is far less likely to than electroplating, because it is bonded in a vacuum at a molecular level rather than deposited in a tank. The dome shape helps further, since there is no sharp edge for a coating to lift from. The honest limit is that any coated surface eventually wears at its highest contact point over years of wear. If you want a piece that cannot wear through at all, order the same design unplated.
Black PVD or black electroplate — which should I order?
If the piece is worn daily, PVD. It is thinner but considerably harder and more abrasion-resistant, so it resists the friction on the dome. Electroplating can be laid on thicker, up to several microns, which helps where a very deep, opaque black is the priority and the wear is light. Either way we state the thickness in microns on the quotation so you are not buying a colour and guessing at the durability.
Does the coating come off on skin?
No. PVD is a bonded film, not a paint, so there is nothing to rub off or transfer. The 316L core underneath contains no copper, so even if the coating were worn through at the edge, the steel beneath does not tarnish, rust or leave a green mark. That is why we are comfortable selling a black-coated ring as skin-safe.
