About this twisted rope hoops
The point of a rope hoop is light, not weight. A smooth tube reflects in one direction and looks like a plain ring; a twisted surface has an edge on every turn, so it flashes as the wearer moves and reads as a more worked piece than it is. That lets you sell a lighter hoop at the visual weight of a heavier one, which matters in silver where the metal is most of the cost.
It is also a form that has to be made rather than bought. Questions about this twisted rope hoops
Does the rope profile make the hoop heavier?
Not for the same outside diameter, because the twist is formed into the strand rather than added to it. What it does is make a lighter hoop look heavier, which is the reason to specify it: at the same visual weight you can use less silver, and at the same silver you can sell a piece that reads as more worked than a plain tube.
Tight rope or open spiral?
A tight rope gives a fine, dense flash and suits a smaller hoop; an open spiral reads bolder and is usually what a larger 25 mm hoop wants. Both are made by forming the strand rather than by buying a finished chain, so there is no tooling cost either way and we will send a sample of each so you can judge the reflection on the ear.
Will the twist catch on hair or clothing?
A rope hoop has a slightly ridged surface, so it can catch more than a smooth tube — usually noticeable only on longer hoops next to loose hair. If that is a concern for your market, specify the 12–15 mm hinged sizes, which sit close to the ear and have little surface exposed to catch.
