About this sterling box chain necklace
A box chain is built from square links that interlock into a flat profile. That flatness is the point: it lies against the neck instead of rolling, so a small pendant hangs facing forward instead of twisting onto its side the way it does on a round or rope chain.
It is also the most forgiving chain to wear hard. There are no protruding edges to catch on clothing, and no twist to straighten. The trade-off is that a box chain is less flexible than a rope, so it is only available in smaller widths; if you need a 4–5 mm chain, specify the rope or a Cuban link instead.

Questions about this sterling box chain necklace
Box chain or rope chain — which should I stock?
Both, if you can. They answer different problems: the box chain keeps a pendant facing forward and stays flat under a collar, while the rope chain carries more weight and looks substantial on its own. If you can only carry one, stock the rope at 3 mm — it sells to more customers — and add the box chain once a pendant range exists.
Why does it stop at 2.5 mm?
Because of how the link is made. A box chain is square links folded into a flat profile, and the geometry becomes impractical above about 2.5 mm — the chain turns stiff and loses the flexibility that makes it comfortable. Above that width we would specify a rope or a Cuban link instead, and we will quote it that way.
Can it be repaired if a link opens?
Yes — a box link can be closed and soldered, which is one reason to specify soldered end caps and a clasp sized to the chain. It is also worth knowing for a market where repairs are part of the service you offer: a square link is far easier to repair invisibly than a twisted rope at the same width.
