Overview
Filigree is the test of a casting. Fine ribs, twisted wire and open gaps are all things a stamp or a die cannot produce — they need the metal to flow into a mould and be finished by hand — so a piece like this is where cast brass separates itself from the cheaper formed methods. The pattern is also what makes an otherwise simple bangle read as intricate work, which is exactly what a trend piece needs to photograph well.
The honest trade-off is strength. Openwork has less metal in it than a solid band, so it is lighter and slightly more delicate, and the thin ribs can be bent by a hard knock if the wall is set too fine. We tune the rib thickness to the size of the piece and, on a wide bangle, will often suggest a sample first so you can feel how much flex the pattern allows before you commit a full run.
